PASCAL PIERME

OVERVIEW

WHAT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO FIT

I have often been told that my first sculpture (1984) was a self-portrait.

It was then for me a struggle, that of discovering materials. I was seeking immediate fulfilment without knowing it didn’t exist. The more I searched, the less I understood. The idea of a long-term work, focused on the force of expansion or retraction, emerged as an intriguing and exciting subject.

Like the need to compare oneself to others, the idea of introducing a second element to a first form struck me as essential after a few years of work.

A circle seems even rounder next to a square, however, a circle can fit into a square and vice versa: “What is not supposed to fit.“

In my current work, I create spaces between forms. It’s a journey of “explosion” an adventure in the material that leads me to slip into the interstitial spaces. The encounter of several forms, originally compatible or incompatible, leads me to consider the question of thickness, of “the space between”.

By simplifying the whole, I impose even more questions on myself, like an invitation to start over again. Without seeking fundamental answers, it is simply the action of doing that pushes me towards a raw and sincere perfection.
